Monckton Responds to My Defense of Abraham

with 52 comments

Update (July 18, 2011): Monckton told he’s not member of House of Lords. Clerk of parliaments publishes letter on Lords’ site saying peer is not and has ‘never been a member of the House of Lords’.

Christopher Monckton, The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, sent the following email message to me in response to my blog post titled Turn the Tables on Monckton:

e-Mail message

The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley's Message to Me

Dear Professor Mandia, – My attention has been drawn to the following weblink:
https://profmandia.wordpress.com/2010/07/18/turn-the-tables-on-monckton/
I am surprised that you express support for Professor Abraham. It may be that you have not had the opportunity to dip into my careful and detailed reply indicating that at a number of points during his presentation he told lies, knowingly and willfully misrepresenting what I had said, conveying these fanciful misrepresentations to third-party scientists, obtaining understandably negative comments from them, and then using the comments publicly against me.
I also note that you have publicly accused me of “fraud”, and have widely circulated that accusation on the internet, and have expressed the intention to invite the mass media to repeat it. Since this is a serious charge, do you have any evidence to back it up, or should I add your name to that of Professor Abraham in the libel case that will be filed shortly? – Monckton of Brenchley

  1. There is an error in the link there (the one in Monckton’s text), instead of linking to your blog entry it links through the Outlook server.

    Mandia: Fixed. Thanks.

    Monckton… what an embarrassment.

  2. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Let us realize the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” Similarly, the arc of science is not always as short as we’d prefer, but it bends towards truth. Distractions like this won’t change that fact, only delay it slightly.

    We’re with you, Scott.

  3. Primo, obviously when Monckton accuses every living climate scientist on the planet of fraud, it’s an entirely different matter.

Secundo, the good news is there will be a plethora of lawyers who would gladly take your case pro bono.

    Tertio, Monckton is a fraud.

  10. Lord Monckton,

Strictly speaking, Prof Mandia accused you of being a fraud.

Expose Monckton for the fraud that he is …

    Here’s one definition

    • a person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities : mediums exposed as tricksters and frauds.

I believe that there are multiple examples demonstrating that the definition is appropriate.

  11. I believe the good Lord’s word is so synonymous with the word trustworthy that he sued the Guardian for £50,000 that they weren’t even aware they’d paid!

You’ll doubtless receive the usual piece of worthless ornately styled puffery from The Office of Monckton (read: cupboard under the stairs) which will at most have some conversational value whenever you next run into John Abraham.

The chances of receiving any communication from a practicing attorney are slightly less than those of CERN going live on schedule.

Now if you could also get Richmal North to sue too, you’d be well on the way to starting a collection of English crackers!

  14. Monkeyton’s behavior is just pathetic. He reminds me of the character “Francis” from “Stripes”:

Psycho: The name’s Francis Soyer, but everybody calls me Psycho. Any of you guys call me Francis, and I’ll kill you.
    Leon: Ooooooh.
Psycho: You just made the list, buddy. And I don’t like nobody touching my stuff. So just keep your meat-hooks off. If I catch any of you guys in my stuff, I’ll kill you. Also, I don’t like nobody touching me. Now, any of you homos touch me, and I’ll kill you.
    Sergeant Hulka: Lighten up, Francis.

Someone needs to yank Chris back and tell him to lighten up.

  15. I would be very surprised if the Viscount initiated anything other than more bluster, as it seems to be something he is good at.

Of course, the fact that he’s targetting you means that you must be doing something great – power to you!

As a total aside, the Viscount claims in his CV to have uncovered a major defense fraud in the 80’s involving warship hull design. The only naval hull controversy during the 80’s involved Moncton’s lot (Margaret Thatcher’s Policy Unit) pushing a commercial design for a Royal Navy vessel over the Navy’s own design. Thatcher (Moncton?) got an official inquiry comissioned on the matter – its descision: the navy is right. Cost? Over 1 million pounds, and if we take Moncton’s CV at face value we can conclude that he cost the taxpayer that money.

  16. I’m with you Scott.
Monckton does nothing but bully and torment opposition to his point of view.
Instead of a scientific debate, whereby the man ought to respond to John’s criticism with a strong scientific reasoning, he wishes to shut Prof. Abraham up.
When he feels confident to ask for the assistance of the WUWT readers to spread his guff, he threatens you for asking your readers to spread the logical rebuttal to his madness.
Monckton is nothing but an ill-informed nuisance that clearly and continually demonstrates that he cannot handle what he dishes out on others.
If Chris cannot handle the heat, he should get out of the kitchen. If he wishes to debate against what is more than a century of relevant scientific investigation, he must accept when experts challenge the flaws in his arguments.
His noise in climate science is nothing short of appalling.

  17. IMO baiting & then threatening legal action is the latest “muddy the waters” strategy; I’ve seen what look to be attempts along those lines.

  22. Well, Mr. Lard Moncky, would you mind detailing how you propose to establish personal jurisdiction over both Professor Abraham in NZ and Professor Mandia in the U.S.? I like the Francis/Stripes reference above, and I’ll add another, an adaptation from Monty Python:

CM: “Now let me fill you in. I’m leading this expedition and we’re going to climb both peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Informed Reader: “I thought there was only one peak, sir.”

CM: (getting up, putting one hand over one eye again and going to large map of Africa on wall and peering at it at point-blank range) “Well, that’ll save a bit of time. Well done. Now the object of this expedition is to see if we can find any trace of last year’s expedition.”

    Informed Reader: “Last year’s expedition?”

CM: “Yes, my brother was leading that, they were going to build a bridge between the two peaks, (looks at map with one hand over eye) My idea I’m afraid.”

Mr. Lard, you know what you can do with your twin-peaks carnival sideshow.

  23. Monckton’s made another mistake. His email text colour, lurid purple – chosen, I assume, to match his prose? – should in fact be green and in block capitals, a worthy long-established tradition here in the UK.

Why? Because when you get one you, often in letter form with no stamp on the envelope, you immediately know not to bother reading the bonkers contents.

Purple emails are obviously the current electronic equivalent! There is a Scottish phrase “mad as cheese” and yes, he is.

  25. Viscount Monckton is most certainly not a fraud. Quite the reverse. He has displayed a genuine, sustained, logical, open, analytical and honest approach to reviewing the evidence and the arguments for alarm about human influences on climate. He finds the evidence and the arguments seriously wanting. So do I, and so do a great many others.

I have to disagree with JMurphy however – I don’t think you could lay it on too thick. I’ve had as much commented on my posts and if you look at WUWT or Jo Nova’s blog, people do say such things and I think that they actually believe it!

  26. John Shade : sarcasm, treated properly, can be a fine thing. Well done.
But you may have laid it on too thick – it was obvious that you were being sarcastic when you associated the words “genuine, sustained, logical, open, analytical and honest approach” with the Merry Monckton.
    Still funny, though, so thanks.

    • MapleLeaf,

You do know that Ferguson is President of SPPI and that Lord Munchkin is Chief Policy Advisor? But look, right in the blurb about Munchkin:-

His contribution to the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 – the correction of a table inserted by IPCC bureaucrats that had overstated tenfold the observed contribution of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets to sea-level rise – earned him the status of Nobel Peace Laureate. His Nobel prize pin, made of gold recovered from a physics experiment, was presented to him by the Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Rochester, New York, USA.

Does that read like a “joke”?

  29. Scott, Friends of Gin & Tonic made an enquiry to the House of Lords. They have a reply, and the Upper House are very not amused.

Viscount Monckton of Brenchley is not and has never been a member of the House of Lords. However, allegations that he has claimed to be a member, and that he has used an emblem resembling the parliamentary emblem, have been drawn to our attention.

The House is currently taking steps with a view to ensuring that Lord Monckton does not in future either claim to be a member of the House or use the parliamentary emblem or any variant thereof.
